The Mighty King

Manfred Mann heisst bürgerlich Manfred Lubowitz. Am 21. Oktober 1940 kam er in Johannesburg, Südafrika, auf die Welt. Der Musiker mit jüdischen Wurzeln gründete die Gruppe Manfred Mann's Earth Band, die verschiedene Hits herausbrachte, darunter "Mighty Quinn".

1968 schrieb Bob Dylan diesen Song, Manfred Mann nahm ihn auf. Zwei Jahre später publizierte Dylan den Song selbst, und 1978 brachte "Manfred Mann's Earth Band" das Lied erneut heraus. 1996 coverte auch die Schweizer Rockband Gotthard "Mighty Quinn". Die Zeit für eine "Gospel-Version" ist also überfällig.

Schon Martin Luther gospelte

Hits vergospeln - diese Idee hat eine lange Tradition. Heilsarmee-Gründer William Booth tat es, und auch der legendäre Martin Luther gab gegen Ende des Mittelalters mächtig Gas. Andere gospelten auss "Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen" ein "Nun ruhen alle Wälder" oder aus "O, Täler, Wald und Höhen" das Lied "Seit ich in heiliger Stunde". Aus einer Gastoldi-Tanzweise wurde "In Dir ist Freude".

Hiermit führen wir diese Tradition fort: Der "Mighty Quinn" von Manfred Mann respektive Bob Dylan wird zum "Mighty King".
